Have a great Halloween with The Honors College and Pencils for Promise!

Hi everyone!

Our Halloween event (Monster Mash) is one week from tomorrow!

This event is very exciting because we are teaming up with Pencils of Promise (a student organization here at EMU). Not only will this event feature some really fun fall activities like corn hole, pumpkin painting, face painting, etc. but it will also serve as a fundaraiser for them with a huge dance party that features food and prizes!

The Halloween activities themselves will be offered from 5pm - 7:30pm. The dancing portion will take place from 6pm - 12am on Thursday, October 29th in McKenny Ballroom!

Another exciting aspect of this event is that we inviting everyone to bring kids! These could be your own children, your little brothers/sisters or your nieces and nephews!  We will have some fun activities for them to get involved such as face painting, bracelet making, and coloring! Please feel free to bring them with you (in costume - there will be a contest and a prize) and make this an even bigger event!

If you plan to attend, please fill out this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/5SM8MYL

We can't wait to see you there!

The Start of Something New!

Welcome to the first day of the Fall 2015 semester!

The first day of classes is always a big day because you get your first impression of how the next 15 weeks are going to go. What was your favorite class so far? Comment below :) You get to find out where exactly your class is, who is in that class, how the professor seems, what assignments you have to do and most importantly, pick your seat.

I always find it humorous that everyone would say in high school, "I can't wait for college because there are no assigned seats"; then by some kind of human instinct we all just assign ourselves anyway and become territorial when someone else sits in our seat the third week of classes! Does this happen to anybody else?

In terms of what's new in the Honors College for this new semester, we have a few events coming up!

Our annual fall picnic will be on Thursday, September 10th from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Big Bob's Lakehouse. This is one of our most popular events with tons of food, fun and opportunities to unwind after the first week of classes! Please RSVP here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HQ59QTD if you plan to attend!

So in the hopes of not overwhelming you with anymore information (those syllabus might be enough to focus on for now) I will end the post with saying I hope you enjoyed your first week at EMU if you are a freshman or welcome back to all current students.

We hope to see you on September 10th! P.S. Coffee Hour starts next Friday :)

Please email me or comment on here with any questions/comments!

Focus group: Opporunity for your voice to be heard (and be given a prize)!

Hello everyone!

I hope your semester is going great, only a few more weeks left!

I just wanted to remind everyone about the non-traditional student initiative and say that it is not too late to get involved!

If you consider yourself to be a non-traditional student, which is a broad definition that may mean:
  • Over 25 years of age
  • Has Dependents
  • Is financially independent
  • Works full time
  • Attends classes part time
  • Did not begin college right after high school
*This definition is according to the NCES (Nation Center for Education Statistics)

Please fill out this survey and come to one of the focus groups! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9FF7TN9

These focus groups would be a more informal meeting where we just try to see what events would be best to plan this upcoming fall for this group as well as find out what your experience has been with Honors and how that could be improved!

Our overall goal of this entire initiative is to provide a greater sense of community amongst all types of Honors students!
We will be giving out a new "Soar Higher" bumper sticker to every person that attends!

We hope to see you soon and hear what you have to say!
Feel free to email me with any further questions or if those dates/times don't work for you!

Break for some opportunities!

Hello all!

I just wanted to take a second to wish everyone a safe and relaxing "spring" break next week! Do you have any really exciting plans?! Of course I'm going to Tennessee which is having an icy time right now, just like here but either way, it's nice to get away!

I wanted to let everyone know about a scholarship that would be great for all of you to apply for! It is the Connelly Commuter Scholarship, a one time award of $250 for several recipients and the deadline is March 1st, 2015.

Here are the requirements:

1.      Be an undergraduate or pre-bachelor student who has completed at least one semester at EMU.
2.      Have a minimum EMU grade point average of 2.0 and maintain good academic standing for 2014-2015.
3.      Be in good judicial standing with Student Judicial Services.
4.      Have financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid for 2014- 2015.
5.      Be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) for Fall 2014 and Winter 2015.
6.      Commute from at least 15 miles away or be living in your family’s home.
7.      Commit to actively seek involvement and learning on EMU’s campus (beyond the classroom) during your year as scholarship recipient (i.e. student organizations, undergraduate research, student employment, volunteerism, etc.).
8.      Agree to meet with a member of the Connelly Commuter Scholarship Committee in Winter semester to discuss your progress of active campus involvement.

Find the rest of the information and the application here: http://www.emich.edu/campuslife/leadership/scholarships.php

This is a great opportunity to help yourself get more involved on campus!

Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming survey going out for non-traditional student interests!

Thanks so much!

Kaylee

P.S. This is what my to-do list for over break looks like, what about yours? :)
