Closing Time: Summer is Almost Over!

Hello to all of my fellow Honors students,

Isn't it wild to think that the Fall semester is less than 3 weeks away!? This is a perfect time to review your class schedule, look up your books and get things together - such as your Commuter Hangtag or stuff for your room!

I know that the later half of August is a busy time for college students so I just wanted to take a moment and give some updates about what will be coming up with The Honors College.

Two big things going on are the Mentoring Program and the Alumni Mentoring Program. Now these may sound similar but are actually two different things.

You have probably heard of the Mentoring Program before, it is a program that matches an incoming Honors student with a current Honors student who can help them transition from high school to Eastern as well as The Honors College. We match these individuals on major(s)/minor(s), living situation, interests, hobbies, and other responses to a survey. Mentors undergo a training and are expected to spend about 30 minutes a week with their mentee. Service hours as well as leadership experience credit are available. This mentorship is about helping a student navigate college, student to student. The Honors College holds events for mentoring relationships throughout the academic year.

This program has been very successful throughout the years and individuals who are mentees their freshman year often return as mentors the following years. It is a great way to get acquainted with the university, have your questions answered and get involved. If you would like to sign up, please fill out this survey:

If you have already signed up, thank you! Look for an email in your inbox inviting you to our first required Mentor Training on Tuesday, September 6th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. here at The Honors College!

The Alumni Mentoring Program is a newer program in which we attempt to match current Honors students with an Alumni in the field they are interested in working with or that has experience in similar post-graduation plans. This time commitment is up to the mentee and mentor to decide, as some alumni may not live in the area. This is a great chance for Juniors and Seniors (but all Honors students are welcome to apply) to talk with someone who can share personal experience as a professional. It is a great networking opportunity. If you would like to sign up, please fill out this survey:

Once you fill out the survey, you will be given more information about the program you signed up for as well as start the process of being matched with another person.

Any questions about either of these programs can be sent to me at kbrow107@emich.edu.

The first Mentor Training is going to happen in early September (September 6th from 1:00-4:00 p.m) which leads right into our annual Ice Cream Social so please join us then and mark it in your calendar!

Wishing you all the best end to your summer,

Kaylee
